We visited the National Library of India in Kolkata on December 15, 2025, with our students and faculty members from the Department of Education. It is the largest library in India and a place of great historical and academic importance. The library is situated in a grand building at Alipore, surrounded by a calm and serene environment that creates an ideal atmosphere for learning.
During the visit, our students learned that the library houses millions of books, journals, newspapers, manuscripts, and rare documents in many Indian and foreign languages. The reading rooms are spacious, well-organised, and quiet, allowing readers to study without disturbance. We were particularly impressed by the rare books section, which preserves valuable old texts and historical records.
The library staff were helpful and provided information about membership, catalogue systems, and preservation methods. Modern facilities, such as digital catalogues and reference services, make it easier for researchers and students to access materials.
Overall, the visit was highly educational and inspiring. The National Library of India plays a vital role in preserving the nation’s intellectual heritage and promoting knowledge. The experience deepened our respect for libraries and their significant contributions to education and research.
